RALEIGH, NC -- Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a historic comprehensive energy and climate bill, with a bipartisan vote of 219-212. This bill is a huge step towards creating a new clean energy economy with millions of jobs that will move America to energy independence and reduce the carbon pollution that causes global warming.
We are proud that six of North Carolina's own Representatives - G.K. Butterfield, Bob Etheridge, Brad Miller, David Price, Heath Shuler, and Mel Watt - voted to create jobs, move our country to clean energy, and reduce global warming pollution. Passing this bill out of the House wasn't easy; it took hard work and some tough compromises to get the job done. Thanks to these Representatives’ votes, America is firmly on track to be a leader in the 21st century global economy.
Unfortunately, Democrats Larry Kissell and Mike McIntyre joined North Carolina Republicans Howard Coble, Virginia Foxx, Walter Jones, Patrick McHenry, and Sue Myrick to try to block progress on clean energy. These members voted against the landmark clean energy package, votes that would have made it harder to cut our dangerous addiction to foreign oil.
Passing this legislation will help shift North Carolina and our nation to a clean energy economy, creating new jobs in manufacturing, labor and clean energy technology. It will increase energy efficiency, help consumers save on energy bills, and protect lower-income families. And it will finally put our country on a course to limit the carbon pollution that causes global warming.
The bill will now move to the Senate, where it needs to be strengthened and delivered to the President's desk. With the help of North Carolina Senators Kay Hagan and Richard Burr, Congressional leaders hope to pass strong clean energy and climate legislation by the end of the year that will create clean energy jobs, reduce our dependence on dirty fuels and lead the world's effort to slow down global warming.
